Celebration for the World Food Day
On Tuesday, October 16th, the students at Pinewood American International School came together to celebrate World Food Day. The theme of the day was #zerohunger. There were many activities dedicated to spreading this message and creating awareness. Upper elementary students worked with Chef Aram of the Hot Pot Pasteria (@hotpotpasteria) restaurant, who participated voluntarily, in preparing food for the homeless. They worked in groups peeling and cutting onions, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, herbs and carrots. They then put the ingredients into a pot and cooked up a delicious and aromatic sauce. All students brought in cooked pasta from home. Once the bechamel sauce was finished, they combined everything, put it into the oven and out came pastichio. Two large pans were donated to Praksis (@ngopraksis), an independent NGO which has as its main goal the creation, application and implementation of humanitarian and medical action, as well as many other ingredients. Early elementary students participated in a scavenger hunt where they had to search for food in groups. Once they found the food, they discussed what they would do with the food. It was gratifying to see that most of the kids wanted to share the food they found with those in their groups or with other groups who did not have as much food. They then went in to work with Chef Aram to make a fruit salad to also be delivered to the NGO. The students cut up bananas, apples, pears, oranges, tangerines, etc. They put it all together, squeeze some lemon juice to mix in and sprinkled some sugar on top. To continue the celebration of World Food Day, grade 4 Pinewood Students visited The American Farm School of Thessaloniki (#afselementary) on Monday, the 22nd of October. There, they met with the grade 4 students of AFS school and participated in joint activities. In honor of the day, they planted a pear tree and then, after discussing about the cultural diversities concerning food and the importance of eliminating hunger in the world, they created posters supporting the #zerohunger concept.
